Synopsis

The Legend of Sleepy Hollowis a supernatural fiction short story which became a milestone in the career of the American historianWashington Irving.
The story is set in Sleepy hallow, a Dutch settlement known for its haunting atmosphere and ghost stories.  It was believed or rather the inhabitants made to belief of the ghost of Hessian trooper, whose head was shot of in a war, moves around in the night as headless horseman in the Sleepy hallow in quest of his head. Ichabod Crane, a school teacher wants to inherit huge wealth of a wealthy farmer Baltus Van Tassel by marrying his daughter Katrina Van Tassel. A town rowdy Abraham Brom Bones also aiming for the same goal and compete with Crane.
On the eventful night Crane attends a harvest party at Baltus’s homestead and listens to the ghost stories of the headless horseman.  He returns after the party and was riding on his horse with fears of imagination.  While going through the Sleepy hallow settlement, he encounters a fellow horseman, but after a moment he could notice the head of the horseman was not placed on the neck, rather placed on his shoulder.  The headless man threatened him and said, “Vanish in a flash”.  Crane rides for his life with his heartbeats and crosses a bridge.
Next day Crane disappeared from the town, leaving Katrina to Abraham. No one could find the remains of Crane except his horse, and a discarded hat. At the end of the story, it is interpreted that the headless horseman was none other than Abraham.
