Hand Shadows to Be Thrown upon the Wall is a book on Shadowgraphy by Henry Bursill. Shadowgraphy often called as ombromanie is a performance art in which a story or images are narrated using hands to produce shadows.
This art once popular had started to decline with the invention of cinema and television to become a major entertainment form. While candle light is ideal for Shadowgraphy, invention of electric bulb ruined the art from its main stage of entertainment. While the classic shadowgraphy was performed to display images of birds and animals, the modern form of the art is performed by displaying famous personalities.
The author of this book Henry Bursill describes various images which is illustrated. The author says, this is an art and can be performed to perfection with continuous practice.
