A Manual of the Hand Lathe is a comprehensive guide to working on hand lathe written by Egbert Pomeroy Watson, who is the author of "The Modern Practice Of American Machinists And Engineers".
This books is illustrated with seventy eight engravings and comprising  concise directions for working metals of all kinds, ivory, bone and precious woods; dyeing, coloring, and French polishing; inlaying by veneers, and various methods practiced to produce elaborate work with dispatch, and at small expense.
The author mentions in his preface that though there are many examples given by him, there is something left out for the workman to find out himself. He neither given recipes for varnishes which he felt cannot be made by inexperienced persons.
