Notes from the Undergroundis written byFyodor Dostoyevsky, a Russian novelist who wrote many books such as The Idiot, The Brothers Karamazov , and his magnum opus Crime and Punishment.
This novel is considered to be existentialist novel, and presents the memoirs of a bitter, isolated, poor man from his diary notes. Written in two parts, the first part attacks the emerging western philosophy and the second part describes destroying events of a man who lives in underground.
At times, sorrow brings enjoyment in individuals especially if the deceased is in their middle ages. This is reflected in the character of the protagonist, who started enjoying his liver pain, like the behavior of protagonist’s in the author’s another novel Crime and Punishment. The protagonist has reached a point of inactivity and he does not react to the curses, and it is even explicitly stated by him as his laziness might also a reason for this.
