Synopsis

Northanger Abbeyis written byJane Austen, an English writer and romance novelist who attained fame through her novels such as “Pride and Prejudice” and Sense and Sensibility.Northanger Abbey narrates the story of Catherine Morland, a 17 years old girl who is fond of gothic novels and believes herself to be like the beautiful heroines of the novels. Her ignorance leads her to failure to read others intentions and always thinks everybody is good. Catherine, not hailing from a wealthy family, has been invited by their neighbors Mr. and Mrs. Allen to a resort at Bath for a social gathering. In Bath, she has been introduced and excited by a young man Henry Tilney, but disappears after their first meet. Later she is introduced to Mrs.Allen’s friend’s family the Thorpes. Catherine spends her time with Isabella Thorpe and John Thorpe, who happened to be Catherine’s brother James Morland’s college friend.Soon Isabella and James falls in romance and John falls in love with Catherine, which she did not intend. Later Henry arrives with his elder brother Frederick Tilney and Sister Eleanor Tilney. Isabella moves away from James, after knowing his not-so-wealthy status and falls for Frederick. Catherine could not digest her friend’s immoral actions and started hating her. Later Catherine was asked to visit Northanger Abbey, the estate of the Tilneys. In Catherine’s mind Northanger Abbey is like a set in her Ghothic stories. Soon this has been corrected by Henry with his real love towards Catherine. In the final moments Henry marries Catherine, inspite of disapproval from his family wishes.
